Gondar

Gondar

Gondar was founded in 1635 by Emperor Fasilades (1632–1667), who recognized the need for a permanent capital to provide internal stability, and Gondar remained the capital of the Ethiopian Empire from the 17th to the mid-19th centuries. It is distinguished by its castles of imperial compound, known as royal enclosures, and by its churches’ walls and ceilings, which are completely ornamented. The city holds the remains of several royal castles, including those in FasilGhebbi (the Royal Enclosure), for which Gondar has been called the "Camelot of Africa."

Harar

Harar is one of Ethiopia’s oldest cities; established in the first half of the 16th century A.D. The fortified historic town of Harar is located in the eastern part of the country on a plateau with deep gorges surrounded by deserts and savannah. The five-meter-high walls surrounding this sacred Muslim city were built between the 13th and 16th centuries by an Emir, in response to the Oromo's migrations northward. This Harar Wall, protecting the capital city of a vast Muslim kingdom in the 16th century, was inscribed by UNESCO in the year 2000.

Lalibela

Lalibela

The 11 medieval monolithic cave churches of this 13th-century 'New Jerusalem' are situated in a mountainous region in the heart of Ethiopia, near a traditional village with circular-shaped dwellings. Lalibela is a high place of Ethiopian Christianity, still today a place of pilgrimage and devotion. The creation of these rock-hewn churches is attributed to one of the last kings of the Zagwe dynasty, St. Lalibela, who reigned around the 13th century A.D. The glory of these churches remains hard to believe that it was entirely the hand of man.
